For a white person to have their full humanity, they have to actively oppose white supremacy, and I want to be whole. My art materials are the stuff of everyday life - the deceptively innocuous things marking our presence within the spaces we inhabit each day.

Health and beauty aids are things we bring into our homes, put on our skin, and use in our daily routines voluntarily. We encounter office supplies in a myriad of ways, and even in the most impersonal institutional setting, they come in contact with intimate details of our being.

As mass-produced commodities, these materials also maintain a connection to global capitalism, reminding us that we are part of a bigger picture of structural oppression. This awareness can be an entry point into a conversation about race.

I’m increasingly turning to autobiography in my art-making, spurred on by a question posed by antiracist organizers at a meeting I attended:
“When did your family become white?” I obtained some of the materials for these artworks during my first visit to Canada in the spring of 2017, as I pondered my French Canadian ancestry, which I know little about since my maternal grandmother died when my mother was two years old. I even found an academic article titled How French Canadians became White Folks, or doing things with race in Quebec during that trip.

This deconstructing of whiteness gives me hope.
Through the works of five contemporary artists and three poets, this exhibit challenges racial codings and engages in both the revision and celebration of Black History.
Chung states: By(e) Default aims to highlight an unconscious and contradictory thought, whiteness is the default, but it denies that it is privileged, all while fearing the loss of its position as the “default.” Whiteness is the standard for how we (and others) measure ourselves (and others). It goes unnoticed until it is deposed from its pedestal. White history is posited as American history, ignoring the full citizenship and contributions (voluntary or involuntary) of people of color in this country and the full context of their stories. It also dictates when we can acknowledge our history and when our opinions and expertise “matter.”

Looking at my French-Canadian heritage in the context of How French-Canadians became White Folks. My first opportunity to visit Canada brought me to Toronto rather than Quebec or Montreal. I made these pieces during the Feminist Art Conference Residency. I wanted to find French-Canadian "things" (non-food items). In advance of the trip, I'd researched "French-Canadian arts & crafts". From the crafts listed in my research, all I could find during my visit (with time/travel constraints) was polyester lace from the Salvation Army thrift store. Not quite real lace, but a perfect metaphor for my project, because I'm not quite French-Canadian (my maternal grandmother was, but she died in New York when my mother was two and we lost all contact with our French-Canadian relatives). I found French-Canadian manufactured bleach from the Toronto dollar store to bleach some of the fabric, and even items manufactured elsewhere had bilingual French/English packaging. At the dollar store, I also found Canadian versions of materials that I'm more familiar with, such as file folders (bilingual too!), bandaids, and white out. I got enough materials to continue experimenting with when I return to New York. Images of some of the new work below.
During our time in Georgia, tART members were in residency at the beautiful home and studio of SSA member Julio Mejia in the mountains of Jasper, Georgia.

Learn more about the project at tART's website, and read a review of the exhibition by Catherine Rush for Burnaway.
Here is the finished piece that I made during the course of the exhibition Freedom at York College Gallery.

The title of this piece is White Liberal Hustler Making Ebola Jokes (#1). It is made from bandages, bleached on the ends and bronzed with fake tan lotions in the center. To view the making of this piece, see my post from 4/16/15.
early- to mid-career artists who engage with the complex climate of race and
identity politics. Despite their varied backgrounds and influences, there is a
shared consciousness of how people of color are treated and represented in a
purportedly post–racial era. The selection of works within the exhibition
responds and reacts to the institutionalized racism that permeates the
quotidian through media, consumer capitalism, and the art-historical canon. The
artists are influenced by ideas of portraiture, seriality, and the consumable
that evoke the ways in which the body of color has been objectified and
abbreviated through time.

first solo show at TPP and Puerto Rico in which she presents a series of
small sculptures and works on paper that transform ordinary consumer items into
reflections of our present moment: post Civil Rights, with the first Black U.S.
President, yet still lacking the true equality striven for in the social
movements of the 1960’s and 70’s. Using materials found in the aisles of
office supply outlets, dollar stores, and health and beauty chains, her
references range from the free-flowing cultural appropriation of “hippie” and
“New Age” styles to the stark cultural erasure inherent in gentrification. Read more
